Construction has started to build the new Civic and Community Enterprise Centre (CCEC) in Cunnamulla, a project worth a total of $6.374 million.

Funded by Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs and Paroo Shire Council, the new CCEC will replace the former Civic Centre which had become structurally unsound and was demolished last year.

Paroo Shire Mayor, Cr Suzette Beresford explains that the new building will not only house Council Chambers and the majority of the office staff, but will be a community hub.

“The CCEC will be a multi-use facility for the whole community to use and enjoy,” Cr Beresford said.

“There will be different size meeting rooms that can be hired out for community or business use, as well as computers with high-speed internet access.”

The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs, said that he and the Department are looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition.

“When I visited the Paroo Shire in 2018 it was obvious that the building needed to be replaced with infrastructure that was safe and met the growing needs of the Council and community.

“The construction will also bring a much needed boost into the local economy at a time where businesses have been battling the negative effects of drought and COVID-19.”

The building tender was awarded to D J Buckley Builders in April, and is expected to reach completion in March 2021.

The Civic and Community Enterprise Centre is a joint initiative of Paroo Shire Council and the Queensland Government.
