Paroo Shire Dog Owners Urged to Protect Their Pets from Deadly Heartworm
Paroo Shire Council is urging all dog owners to take immediate action against heartworm, a life-threatening disease that has recently been detected in surrendered dogs within the region.
Heartworm is transmitted through mosquito bites, where larvae enter the bloodstream and grow into adult worms that lodge in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. If left untreated, heartworm can cause severe suffering and ultimately be fatal for dogs.
According to the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), symptoms of heartworm disease can include:
- Persistent cough
- Fatigue and reluctance to exercise
- Weight loss and decreased appetite
- Difficulty breathing.
If your dog is not already protected, now is the time to act. Preventative treatments, such as monthly tablets, spot-on applications, or an annual injection, are widely available through veterinarians and pet supply stores. If you are unsure about your dog’s heartworm status, a simple blood test can detect the presence of infection before serious damage occurs.
“Heartworm is a preventable disease, and yet we are seeing cases in our community that could have been avoided with regular preventative care,” a Paroo Shire Council spokesperson said. “We strongly encourage all pet owners to consult their local veterinarian and ensure their dogs are protected.”
